What are therapy sessions like?
Sessions typically last between 50 to 60 minutes and will take place weekly. While there are many different types of therapy, my approach is centered around Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). In our work together, we'll collaborate to set an agenda for each session. A typical meeting might include checking in on your experience from the previous week, discussing any assignments you’ve worked on, tackling one or two current issues, reviewing what we've accomplished in the session, and planning for the week ahead. While talking about challenges can be really helpful—and some sessions might be more about venting—what’s most empowering is setting goals and finding solutions for the specific problems you’re facing. We'll work together to identify those problems and come up with strategies to address them.
FAQs
What is CBT?
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a practical, short-term therapy that focuses on finding solutions for a variety of issues like depression, anxiety, anger, sleep problems, relationship struggles, and fears. In CBT, you'll learn techniques that you can use whenever you need them, and that will stay with you for life. The main focus is on how you're thinking, behaving, and communicating right now, helping you make changes in the present to improve your overall well-being.
What happens in between our appointments?
Think of it like this: if you had a personal trainer at the gym, you'd expect to get guidance on how to exercise even when they're not around. The same idea applies in CBT. What we work on in therapy is meant to be something you practice on your own outside of sessions. Research shows that clients who complete practice assignments tend to overcome challenges more quickly and keep their progress longer. Your practice might include things like tracking your mood, thoughts, and behaviors, scheduling activities, setting goals, challenging negative thoughts, gathering information, improving your communication, and other exercises. The best part is, these tools and skills will stick with you for life.
How do I know if therapy is working for me?
At the start of therapy, we'll set specific goals together. As we go along, you can adjust those goals, and we’ll talk about any changes to our plan. I’ll also ask you to fill out some assessments every now and then to check in on your progress. This helps us see when and how to tweak our approach and track how you're doing with your goals. And feel free to share your feedback with me too—it’ll help us understand what’s working best for you!
